Ryan has been so excited about this ant farm. He got it for Sam for Christmas but they wouldn't send us the ants until there were consecutive days when it wasn't below freezing. Finally, the ants came….African Fire ANTS, that is. Ryan scared Sam at the beginning to not knock it over by saying they would bite. That REALLY scared him, so much that he wouldn't even look at them. I calmed him by saying they were stuck inside and he is bigger than they are. He eased up and we were really enjoying the little guys. They are pretty mesmerizing in how they dig their tunnels.
The next day, Rivs and Melanie came over and Sam was excited to show off his first pets. Sure enough, he knocked it over. Sam was screaming, ants were everywhere, and Melanie and I were trying to make sense out of the chaos. It was so comedic (looking back). We tried to barricade the boys and deal with the ants but the ants got onto the carpet and were crawling everywhere… more tears. We would scoop them up and put them into the farm only to have more crawl out! This went on for about 10 minutes, two in and three out. I was bit THREE times and it really stung. Finally, I put them in a tupperware container and said, "Ryan can deal with it!" Looking back, I should have stepped on them or just flushed them down the toilet, especially after those stings.
Melanie and I were laughing pretty soon after. We have a few surviving ants and Ryan has TAPED it shut so they are enjoyable again.
