Olympia

Our next stop was Olympia. It was almost a 2 hour drive. The drivers drive on the shoulder so it is easy to pass any time. Our little Fiat has no get up and go even though it has 6 gears. We stopped at Lidl and got some food for our journey.
I think Olympia was my favorite. On the way, we listened to Percy Jackson’s retelling the Greek myths and it brought the gods to life. Also, Rick Steves travel guide told all the details of what Olympia was like in its hay day. It is incredible to learn how the Olympic Games were done then and how we unite the world and continue this tradition today. Athletes had to step on castrated bulls’ testicles as a sworn testament not to cheat. If anyone cheated, their names were written on the stones of the statues as you entered the stadium and people would spit on them as they entered. There was a temple to Zeus and Hera and a Hearth for Hestia where the olympic flame is made. We raced on the field and essentially had the whole place to ourselves aside from another family from Canada.
